Foilyage, the bright in-between.

Hand-painted like balayage, wrapped in foil like highlights. The result: brighter, more saturated dimension than balayage alone can deliver.

When balayage isn't bright enough.

Balayage is gorgeous, but it has limits. Hand-painted lightener processed in open air can only lift hair so far before it stalls — usually to a soft, sandy blonde. Beyond that, you need heat.

Foilyage wraps each hand-painted section in foil, trapping heat against the hair and pushing lift further. The result is the placement and grow-out of balayage with the saturation and brightness of traditional foils.

If you’ve done balayage before and thought “I wish it was brighter” — this is the service that gets you there.

What to expect.

Balayage is a longer appointment than classic color. Here's how the time breaks down.

Questions guests ask.

  • Foilyage is a hybrid technique — balayage hand-painting plus traditional foil wrapping. Each section is painted freehand for that soft, blended look, then wrapped in foil to trap heat during processing.

The foil gives you more lift and brightness than balayage alone, while keeping the hand-painted softness at the root area. Best of both worlds for guests who want bright color without a harsh regrowth line.

  • Partial foilyage starts at $145+ and full head foilyage starts at $160+. Final price depends on hair length, density, and the artist working with you.

If your goal involves a big lift from a dark starting level, your colorist will quote the full plan at consultation — sometimes the brightest results need a second session.

  • Neither is universally better — they're built for different goals. Balayage gives you softer, sun-kissed dimension with the lowest-maintenance grow-out. Foilyage gives you brighter, more saturated lift while still keeping a blended root.

If you want subtle: balayage. If you want bright: foilyage. Your consultation will recommend the right approach for your starting level and the look you're after.

  • The lift lasts as long as your hair grows — there's no harsh regrowth line because the painting starts away from the root. Most guests come back every 10-14 weeks for a full refresh.

In between, a gloss every 6-8 weeks keeps the tone clean and stretches the time between full services. Cool tones need more frequent toning than warm or neutral tones.

  • Any lightening service has impact, and foilyage lifts more than balayage because of the heat under foil. We use bond-building additives in every service to protect the hair through the lift.

The more dramatic the change, the more aftercare matters. Sulfate-free shampoo, weekly bond treatment, and a heat protectant are non-negotiable. Your colorist will recommend specific products at checkout.

  • Yes — foilyage is actually one of the best techniques for dark hair because the foil traps the heat needed to lift deeper levels. Going from dark brown to brightness is exactly what foilyage was built for.

If your goal is a dramatic lift (more than 3-4 levels), your colorist may recommend staging it across two sessions to protect the hair. The consultation will lay out the full plan and timeline.

  • Partial foilyage: 2.5-3.5 hours. Full head foilyage: 3.5-5 hours. The foil-wrapping step adds time over straight balayage because each section is sectioned, painted, and folded individually.

First-time guests should plan for the longer end of the range. If you're adding a haircut or a gloss after, add 30-60 minutes. We'll confirm your total time block when you book.

  • Yes — switching from balayage to foilyage is one of the most common requests we get from guests who want to go brighter. Your colorist will work the foilyage between and beyond your existing balayage placement to add lift without over-processing already-lightened sections.

Bring details about your last few balayage appointments if you can — when they were done, what was used, and any photos of how they looked at their brightest. The more we know, the better the plan.
